As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits Russia, a key highlight is the announcement of a joint Indo-Russian mission to explore the moon using a satellite and a lander.

India's second mission to the moon called Chandrayaan - II is likely to be launched in 2011-12 and will be a joint Indo-Russian effort.

The project will include the two countries jointly developing a `lunar rover', a robotic vehicle that will move around on the moon surface after achieving a soft landing on the moon surface.

ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair is to accompany the Prime Minister to take this important joint lunar mission forward.

India's maiden mission to the moon called Chandrayaan-I is already at an advanced stage of fabrication and is likely to be launched in April 2008.

It is purely an orbiting satellite explorer with a small probe being hurtled down at the moon. There is no Russian collaboration in Chandrayaan-I, where the US has a significant presence.

India and Russia have a robust collaboration in space and India's first astronaut Rakesh Sharma lifted off in a Russian Soyuz rocket in 1984.

Russia has also supplied the cryogenic engines used by India to heave its heavy communications satellites into space from Sriharikota.

ISRO has already announced that it is ready to send an Indian in space using indigenous rockets from our country as early as 2014 and then follow it up with a manned mission to the moon by about 2020 which it estimates would cost about Rs 10,000 crores.
